From a young age, Helen Hodgins was destined to work with words. The daughter of a poet and an author, language was part of the family fabric — but it wasn’t long before Helen discovered that what truly sparked her interest was how words could be used to shape arguments, challenge ideas and solve problems. Law became a natural fit.

Helen studied Law and Commerce at Deakin University, graduating with Honours. But her education wasn’t limited to the lecture halls. In the early years of her degree, she gained an unexpected crash course in human behaviour behind the bar of a rather “rough” local pub. There, she honed the kind of people skills you won’t find in a textbook — handling high-pressure situations and high-spirited patrons with humour and grace.

In 2016, Helen joined Hunt & Hunt as a legal assistant in the Compulsory Land Acquisition team. It was a formative experience that sharpened her organisational skills and gave her a solid grounding in legal process and client service — qualities that would shape her career.

After graduating, Helen began her legal career in earnest in March 2019 as a graduate, rotating through the Commercial, Litigation and Property teams. She was admitted to practice in August 2019 and officially joined the Litigation team in March 2020 — just in time for one of the most unpredictable years in modern legal practice.

Helen thrived. She was promoted to Associate in July 2022 and became a Senior Associate in January 2025, thanks to her sharp legal mind, strategic thinking and relentless energy. She now plays a key role in the Litigation team, where her attention to detail and client-first approach are held in high regard.

Outside the office, Helen has a long list of interests — starting with wine. Wine tastings, wine bars, wineries… she’s not picky. She’s also an avid gig-goer with a soft spot for ‘90s rock, and when the music’s not playing, she’s likely walking — fast. A self-proclaimed “radical walker,” Helen rarely drives if her legs will do the job.

She also harbours a low-key passion for Melbourne’s tram network. While she stops short of calling herself a tram enthusiast, her knowledge of routes and stops could rival a Yarra Trams veteran.

Travel is on the agenda too — though Helen insists that’s not exactly a unique trait. Still, whether it’s overseas or just across town, she approaches each journey (professional or personal) with curiosity, insight and a clear sense of direction.

Helen Hodgins is a walking (and walking… and walking) example of what it means to combine intellect, individuality and authenticity. With her strong legal grounding, fast mind and quick wit, she’s a standout presence at Hunt & Hunt — and one you’ll definitely want on your team.
